Why
Cozumel
There are many islands where you can relax and enjoy year
round mild temperatures on beaches surrounded by the spectacular
blue Caribbean Sea, but on Cozumel you'll also find jungles,
Mayan ruins, delicious and inexpensive restaurants,
and friendly shopkeepers ready to bargain... but of course
Cozumel's world class diving draws the most people.
Luckily,
the entire reef system is a protected national park, so despite
being one of the most popular dive destinations in the world,
our reefs are as healthy as when Jacques Cousteau recognized
Cozumel's as one of the world's most beautiful reef systems
back in 1961.
Getting
Here
Located twelve miles off the southern coast of the Yucatan,
you can reach Cozumel in just a few hours by flying directly
into our international airport from Miami or Houston. Some
airlines stop in nearby Cancun before continuing to Cozumel.
Or take the ferry Playa del Carmen on the mainland.
At 28
miles long and 10 miles wide, Cozumel is Mexico's largest
island, but it's small enough that you'll feel at home right
away. The town of San Miguel, the airport, and the hotels
are all located on the western side of the island. There are
dozens of great restaurants and shops within walking distance
of the Plaza. Hotels, guest houses, and all-inclusive resorts
catering to divers are scattered along the west coast. Jungle
tours, horseback riding, deep sea fishing, and lots of other
activities are available for when you're not underwater.
The
Mainland
Take a short trip on the Ferry to the mainland for a day of
shopping, dining, and sightseeing. Other facinating sites
such as Chichen Itza with its massive pyramids that rival
those at Cheops, and Tulum, the only Mayan city built overlooking
the sea, and even Tikal in its lush jungle settings where
wild monkeys still can be seen, each are an easy one day excursion
from Cozumel. In addition to the spectacular open water diving,
the Akumal are well-known for the underground rivers that
honeycomb the porous limestone of the Yucatan which provide
some of the most beautiful cave and cavern or "cenote"
diving in the world.
